Additional Liability Insurance (ALI)

No.  Minimum liability insurance coverage is included in all rates at no additional charge at all locations in Canada.

The liability limit for locations in Canada is 200,000.00 CAD Public Liability & Property Damage coverage per accident.

All vehicles are not to be driven on unpaved roads. (gravel, dirt, etc...)

Note: Liability insurance limits are subject to change by provincial law.

Customers may inquire for additional information at time of rental.


Optional Coverages

Acceptance of the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) reduces the renters and authorized additional drivers financial responsibility to between 250.00 CAD and 2500.00 CAD depending on car group confirmed, if the car is damaged or stolen while under rental contract. Using the vehicle in violation of any of the use restrictions listed on the rental agreement could void LDW and leave the renter fully responsible for any damage to the vehicle.

Partial Loss Damage Waiver (PDW) is available at certain rental locations to relieve the renter of the first $1,000 CAD of the loss of, or damage to, the Avis car.

All inquiries regarding PDW availability and cost should be referred to the rental location.

All Avis cars are not to be driven on unpaved roads (like gravel, dirt, etc.).

If LDW is not accepted, the customer is financially responsible for the full value of the car if:

  • Accident damage
  • Glass damage
  • Vandalism
  • Theft of the car
  • Stolen items such as radio, battery, etc.

Global insurance coverages are always subject to change. Please verify at time of rental.


Credit Card Policies

Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental.

Accepted credit card list: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club, Diner's Club Int'l, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, and Visa.

Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards.

At the time of rental, a hold of $750.00 CAD or estimated rental charges plus 20%, whichever is greater, is placed on the credit card.


Debit Card Policies

Debit cards are not accepted at time of rental as credit identification, however, they can be used at time of return to pay for the rental. You must have a honored charge card to qualify for rental. .


Drivers License

At the time of rental, the driver must present a valid drivers license in the drivers name.  All customers must also present a second form of ID. Please refer to the Additional Information topic for details.
Canada licenses required by issuing province to rent a vehicle are:  Manitoba requires Class 5 Full (F), New Brunswick requires Class 7 (level 2 only) and Class 5, Ontario requires Class G & G2 and all other provinces require Class 5.

Customers presenting a drivers license in a non-Roman alphabet must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their valid drivers license.


Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and PAI-Plus are optional coverages the customer may purchase at the time of rental.

Personal Accident Insurance provides accidental death and medical expense benefits to the renter and all passengers in the Avis car.

Personal Accident Insurance Plus offers an Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit.

PAI Plus offers an Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit of CAD 100,000 per accident for the renter and all passengers in the Avis vehicle.

Coverage for paralysis is CAD 100,000 for the renter and CAD 10,000 for each passenger.

PAI Plus also includes coverage for:

  • Emergency transportation
  • Emergency accomodations
  • Road Hazard Service
  • Towing
  • Legal Defense
  • Lost keys/remote
  • Funeral Expenses

PAI Plus benefits described are payable in addition to any other insurance benefits.

There are limitations for this coverage.  For complete details & restrictions, the customer may inquire at the time of rental.

GST applies on PAI Plus in all provinces.


Public Liability and Property Damage

Public liability insurance is in accordance with the insurance laws of the country.  Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions and acceptance.

Note: Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles.  The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental.  Any waiver must be discussed directly with the location upon arrival.


Additional Fees

Winter Tires are mandatory on certain roads or the renter/driver may be ticketed by RCMP.

QUEBEC -
It is mandatory that all vehicles registered in the province of Quebec be equipped with winter tires during the winter months of December through March. All rentals will be charged a daily Tire Management Fee up to 4.50 CAD per day for year-round tire maintenance.  The fee is subject to concession recovery fees, GST and QST.

ALL OTHER PROVINCES -
Winter tire equipped vehicles maybe available in the winter season for reservations at some locations. An additional fee up to 20.00 CAD per day will apply.  Fees vary by location and car group.


Additional Information

For vehicle Groups: F (Intermediate), G (Premium), H (Luxury), K (Convertible), P (Full Size Pickup), W (Standard), L (Full Size SUV), Z (Premium SUV) and all Group X (Specialty Vehicles).

At locations in Canada, you may be asked to provide an additional form of identification as a condition to rent a vehicle. Acceptable forms of additional identification are: 

  • Military ID
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • Canadian passport
  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card
  • Foreign passport that meets the requirements
  • Nexus or Fast/Express card
  • Non-driver's license issued by a province or territory
  • ID card issued by the federal government, provincial or territorial government
  • Credit card (other than the one being used for payment of rental) in Customer's name

Age Requirements

Rather than requiring customers to be 25 to rent, Avis at this location now rents to customers between the ages of 21-24.  An underage surcharge may apply and will automatically be applied to the reservation.

Additionally, the following restrictions also will apply for renters between the ages of 21-24: Rentals of luxury cars, mini-vans, 12-passenger vans, specialty cars, and SUVs will not be permitted.

Fuel Policy

 

How old do I need to be to drive a rental vehicle?

To drive our vehicles, you and all of your drivers need to be at least 19 years old and have held a full, valid driving licence for at least 1/2 year at the start of your rental. Renters under 21 can only rent car group A. Renters 21 and up can rent all car groups except for car groups F, J and all Porsche vehicles, the renter must be 25. .

I'm under 25; do I need to pay a young driver surcharge?

If you or any of your drivers are under 25 when you pick up the vehicle, you will each have to pay a young driver surcharge. The cost for this will depend on where you are picking the vehicle up from but you can expect it to be between 11,90 EUR and 14,64 EUR per day, for each driver.
If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.

Are there any maximum age restrictions?

No, so long as you hold a full, valid driving licence for at least 1/2 year.


Prepay Terms

  • Retain your reservation confirmation number as it is necessary for modification, cancellation or no-show refund requests. Changes to your prepay reservation must be made either on Avis.com, Avis.com.au or Avis.co.nz or at the rental counter. At time of change, current rates, taxes and fees apply.
  • Your credit or debit card will be charged upon reservation confirmation. Method of prepayment toward your rental may not be changed after confirmation.
  • Debit cards are not accepted at some Avis locations and are not a recommended form of prepayment.
  • While a debit or prepaid charge card is an acceptable form of rental prepayment online, they may not be accepted for the credit hold required when you pick up your vehicle.
  • Please review the terms and conditions on our confirmation page regarding credit or debit card acceptance at the location. To release the vehicle to you at time of pick-up, all rental terms and conditions must be met, regardless of your original prepayment.
  • Prepaid Debit/Gift cards are not acceptable methods of credit identification to pick up a vehicle at any location. One of the above mentioned cards must be presented. Prepaid Debit/Gift cards are accepted at time of return only.
  • The same credit or debit card used to complete an online Pay Now reservation must be presented at the rental pick-up counter as a form of identification.
  • At the time of rental a hold of $750.00 CAD or estimated rental charges plus 20%, whichever is greater, is placed on the credit card. A prepaid charge card is not accepted for this required hold.
  • The card presented at pickup will be the card of record for the rental.
  • Prepaid reservations are only offered at participating locations.
  • Upon paying your rental with a Debit Card, Avis will generally request an authorization hold against your account for the estimated charges of the rental but reserves the right in its sole, discretion, to request extra value based on certain factors as we deem appropriate. Some exceptions may apply. THESE FUNDS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE.
  • If you selected Fuel Service Option, fuel price isn't included in your reservation total, but prevailing market rate will be added when you return your vehicle.
  • Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Accepted credit cards: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club Intl, Discover, China Union Pay, GE Capital, JCB, MasterCard, and Visa. Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards.
  • Coupons may be applied to prepay rentals. Vouchers or Avis rental certificates cannot be used in conjunction with a prepay reservation.
  • Gift Cards (Avis or any other) are not allowed on prepay reservations.
  • Canada locations do not accept bank debit cards as a form of credit identification.
  • When the rental is over, we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account - unless you already paid toward your rental, in which case the hold will be only $100 CAD. While this hold is in place, the funds will not be available for your use.
  • Avis is not responsible for any returned checks or overdrafts based on this policy.
  • Your quoted rental rate is based on the exact parameters (locations, dates, etc.) of your particular rental - changing your confirmed reservation parameters could result in a different rate.
  • There is no fee for making the following changes: vehicle type, options (GPS, protections, etc.), rental period dates/times, adding other drivers, switching between participating prepay pick-up locations within the same country. To change to a non-participating location or one outside of the original pick-up country, you must cancel your original reservation (with applicable cancellation fee) and re-book at then current rates.
  • Non-permissible changes include: method of prepayment; name on reservation; changing your pick-up to a non-participating prepay location or one outside of the original pick-up country. If you still wish to make these changes, you must cancel your original prepay reservation with applicable cancellation fee and re-book at then current rates.
  • At time of rental pick-up, location rental qualification rules apply. The name on all rental credentials (license and credit or debit card) must match the name on the reservation. If the names do not match, it is deemed a non-permissible change to your prepay reservation and must follow procedures to cancel and re-book at then current rates (with applicable cancellation or no-show fees).
  • At the time of pick up, driver must present a valid driver's license and credit card in the driver's name. A prepaid charge card is not an acceptable credential. All drivers must have a safe driving record.
  • At the time of rental, the renter or authorized driver may be subject to an electronic DMV check from the issuing state of the driver's license, or may be asked to sign a declaration attesting to specific criteria.
  • Positive identification in addition to your driver's license may be required.
  • Your total rental rate is calculated based on the information provided at time of reservation.
  • Vehicles are rented on a daily (24-hour) basis. There is a 29-minute grace period for returns. After 30 minutes late, a 3/4-day late charge + $.01 + taxes apply. After 90 minutes late, full-day late charges + taxes apply. There is no grace period for rental fees, surcharges and optional equipment or protections charges, so full-day late charges will apply for these items.
  • Extensions or late returns result in additional charges.
  • Rather than requiring customers to be 25 to rent, Avis now rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card and driver's license. At time of rental, we will automatically apply an additional underage surcharge for these drivers.
  • Additionally, the following restrictions also will apply for renters between the ages of 21-24: Renters of luxury cars, mini-vans, 12-passenger vans, specialty cars, full-size SUVs and premium SUVs will not be permitted.
  • In Quebec, the minimum age to rent vehicle groups A, B, C, D & E is 21 with an underage fee of $25-per-day CAD for renters age 21-24. For all other vehicle groups, the minimum age is 25. In Saskatchewan, the minimum age is 18. No under age fee applies.
  • In Canada, the charge for additional drivers is $12-per-day CAD per additional driver.
  • The following are exempt from additional driver charges: renter's employer or regular fellow employee when on company business; renter's spouse or domestic partner; disabled renters who have completed the non-licensed renter form.

Rental Options

Roadside SafetyNet

  • Taxes not included in the Estimated Total and will be applied at the time of rental
  • Roadside SafetyNet (RSN) service is available at all participating Avis locations in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico & U.S. Virgin Islands and New Zealand.
  • The daily/weekly fee for the Avis Roadside SafetyNet Option is subject to change.
  • RSN covers the cost for assistance with key replacement, lockouts, tire change service fee, jump starts and emergency fuel delivery (up to 3 gallons).
  • Prohibited use of the vehicle will void this option.

 

Other Options

  • Rental options not selected/offered on the avis.com website can not be modified online but have been calculated in the Estimated Total.
  • Taxes not included in the Estimated Total and will be applied at the time of rental.
  • Modifications to these rental options must be made by contacting customer service or can be made at the rental counter. 

 


One Way Rentals

Can I pick up the vehicle from one rental location and return it to another?
Yes, some rental locations let you collect the vehicle and any optional extras from one rental location and return them to another.
How much is the One-Way fee?
The price depends on the rental location. If you want to pick up the vehicle and return it to a different location in the same country, you can expect it to be between 15 EUR and 33,21 EUR. If you want to pick up the vehicle in one country and drop it off in another country, you can expect it to be between 100 EUR and 4.500 EUR.
How do I get a One-Way rental?
You can request a one-way rental when you book or you can ask for it when you get to the rental location.
If you asked for a one-way rental when you booked, the fee will be included in your rental price.
How much will it cost if I did not request a One-Way rental but return the vehicle to a different location?
You will be charged a one-way fee at the pay at location prices available on the day you return the vehicle.

I have a disability, do you offer adapted vehicles?
Yes, specially adapted vehicles are available at some of our rental locations. Please call the Reservations team for more information.
I have a disability, do you offer hand controls?
No, regrettably, we do not currently offer hand controls or panoramic mirrors at this time.

Popular optional extras to rent

I have small children, do you offer child seats?
Yes, we offer baby, infant, and child seats. A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos. An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos. A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 12 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.
In some rental locations, we may arrange for a third party to fit the seat for you. But remember, it is always your responsibility to check the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.
Please note: In the Germany, all children must normally use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 150 cm tall.
How much are your child seats?
The fee for renting a seat will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between EUR 13.00 and EUR 16.31 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 6 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum EUR 86.59 and get to use the seat for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, range between EUR 80.00 and EUR 200.00 plus the rental costs.
I am not familiar with the area; can I rent a GPS (satellite navigation system)?
Yes, the fee for renting a GPS will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between EUR 11.00 and EUR 13.80 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 14 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 14 days and get to use the GPS for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

If the GPS is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, range between 209.00 EUR and 260.00 EUR plus the rental costs.
Please note: In some countries, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells you where speed cameras are. It is illegal in Germany. If you rent a GPS from us, it won't give you speed camera information.
Do you offer an audio tour guide service on your GPS?
Yes, it is available with the Travel Companion Full Version at selected stations.
I want to be able to access the internet anywhere I go, do you offer a solution?
Yes, we offer Travel Companion Full Version at selected stations. Here you can connect to 5 devices with unlimited data usage and unlimited international calls. We provide this service on behalf of a third party so you will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with them. This terms and conditions have to be signed by yourself on the device at time of rental.
Please note: In many countries, including the Germany, it is illegal to drive while using a handheld mobile phone, tablet or other communications device. It is your responsibility to drive safely and according to the laws of the country you are driving in.
How much does Travel Companion Full version cost?
The fee for hiring Travel Companion Full version will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to be between EUR 13.80 and EUR 16.80 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 14 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 14 days and get to use the Travel Companion Full Version (TCT) for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
If the mobile Travel Companion device is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, amount to EUR 260.00 plus the rental costs.
If any mobile accessories are damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are expected to range between EUR 10.00 and EUR 150.00 plus the rental costs.
I am intending to drive along toll roads; do you offer a device to make this quicker and easier for me?
No, unfortunately we do not offer any electronic toll charging devices at this time.

Winter equipment to rent

I am concerned about the road conditions, do you offer all-weather tyres?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it’s illegal to drive without all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with them and the fee will be included in your rental fee or contract.
We can also supply all-weather tyres for a fee. This will depend on where you’re renting but you can expect it to be between 15 EUR and 18,70 EUR a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the all-weather tyres for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

During winter season (15 November to 15 March), our rental vehicles in germany are equipped with winter tyres. The fee for this is already included in the rental price (deviations possible for business customers).
If any all-weather tyre is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, amount to EUR 150.00 and EUR 400.00 plus the rental costs.
In the event that your rental does not already contain all-weather tyres and you want to have these tyres, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. If you need them at shorter notice, please call the Reservations team.

I am going skiing, do you offer snow chains?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it is illegal to drive without Snow Chains or all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with snow chains and the fee will be included in your rental fee. You can ask not to have these but we recommend that you take either snow chains or all-weather tyres at these locations.
Snow chains are also available in some other rental locations. The fee for snow chains depends on where you are renting but you can expect it to be between 72.00 EUR and 90.35 EUR a rental.
If any snow chain is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, rate between 69 EUR and 100 EUR plus rental costs.
We can not fit snow chains for you, and we can not arrange for them to be fitted.

Travel Into Other Countries

Vehicles at this location can be driven throughout the Canadian Provinces with no restrictions. Based on availability; One-way rentals may be allowed to some Canadian cities. Vehicles at this location can be driven throughout the continental US with no restrictions. Based on availability; One-way rentals may be allowed to some US cities.

Vehicles at this location are not allowed to travel into Alaska. One-way rentals are also not permitted.

Vehicles at this location are not allowed to travel into Mexico. One-way rentals are also not permitted.


e-Tolls

Please be aware of roads that maybe "cashless tolls" and drivers on these roads are not able to pay cash once they have entered these roads. You automatically opt into our e-Toll service program and will be charged $17.00 plus GST/HST per rental, plus incurred tolls at the maximum prevailing rates posted by the toll authority. The charges may take 4-8 weeks after the rental to be billed to your credit card/debit card on file
